Meet the Founders
Once upon a time, in a far-off land, the New Terrain Brewing Co was founded by Josh and Kaylee Robbins, two beer industry professionals, in pursuit of following their passion to create high quality, outstanding, and exploratory beers. It was decided that the New Terrain Brewing Co's mission was to manifest a socially responsible company, focused on the art & science of elevated craft beer while cultivating a joyful environment for all to enjoy it in. Josh relishes the process behind crafting great beers and Kaylee fancies sharing his beers with the world.
From a young age, Josh has dedicated his life to science by asking questions about the physical world around him. Growing up in the small town of Delta, CO, he was eager to move to Golden in 1991 to attend the Colorado School of Mines to study engineering. After receiving his undergraduate degree, he moved to Dallas, TX to work as a process engineer at Texas Instruments. By 1998, he returned to Golden to receive his phD in Chemical Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines. Josh then started his first 2 companies, both focused on thin-film semi conductor material technologies. He spent the next 11 years writing technical papers, raising government grants, and conducting experiments for his technologies.
Originally from southern California, Kaylee moved to Colorado in 1999 to attend the University of Colorado Boulder. Although she will always be a beach girl at heart, she welcomed the transition from shore life to mountain living and never moved back. After receiving her undergraduate degree in Environmental Science, she spent several years working in Denver as an Air Quality Scientist at a Weather Software Engineering Company. In 2012, she received her phD in Mineral and Energy Economics from the Colorado School of Mines, where her research focused on the external benefits of aluminum can recycling. (Hence she is a strong supporter of craft beer packaged in aluminum cans.)
Meanwhile in 2007, the couple embarked on what was to become their lifelong passion, an adventure pursuing the craftsmanship of excellent beer. Josh quickly realized that his Chemical Engineering knowledge was directly applicable to brewing, a process of chemical reactions, heat transfer, fluid transfer, and process control. The hobby quickly became an obsession as the two became avid devotees to the culture of craft beer. By the summer of 2012, the two were at a crossroads with their individual careers; Josh closed the doors to his 2nd technology company and Kaylee was completing her dissertation and research position. They decided to veer from their traditional science and research-oriented career paths, to open a small craft brewery and taproom. In 2015, 3 years after they wrote their initial business plan and 2 successful years working as head brewer and head of sales, Josh and Kaylee chose to leave the small operation when another opportunity arose. They decided to take the plunge into new terrain and follow their dream of opening a production brewery in Golden, CO with more opportunities for growth, creativity and experimentation. Shortly after securing the perfect piece of property and following an instinct to chase their dreams, the New Terrain Brewing Company was born.
